Oxygen saves lives. For newborns, especially those born too soon or critically ill, it is an essential therapy. Yet oxygen is not without risks: too much can damage vital organs and impair vision, while too little threatens survival. Getting oxygen right in the first days of life is therefore critical.
Despite this, safe oxygen therapy is still not available to all who need it. In many parts of the world, oxygen remains inaccessible, unaffordable, or is used without the safeguards needed to prevent harm.
In 2023, the World Health Assembly resolution called for universal access to safe, high-quality care at birth and in the neonatal period. UNISON exists to help realise that vision.
We are a global consortium of healthcare workers, researchers, innovators, stakeholders, and policymakers working together to ensure that every newborn who needs oxygen receives it safely- wherever they are born.
